HONRADO
1:9 scale (Trad.) Andalusian stallion in piaffe

sculpted by Jennifer Kistler

Please keep in mind the sculptures on this page are IN PROGRESS.
On the Andalusian, I haven't yet worked on the head, ears, hooves,
or tail in earnest (not to mention the flowing mane that isn't yet added).
He will be called Honrado, which means honest in Spanish.

Inspired by the beauty and natural ability of the Andalusian breed, and my passion for classical dressage, I have chosen to sculpt a stallion performing the piaffe. My goal is to capture a very expressive moment. His mane and tail will be swinging with his movement to complete the picture. I am excited to see him starting to come together. Note I adjusted his posture from the earlier plans, I decided he should be more correct and lowered his hindquarters and raised his head and neck, and I am very happy with the change.

I have been researching Andalusian conformation with the aid of This Is The Spanish Horse by Juan Llamas, an excellent book, so I hope to capture the distinct look of a correct Andalusian.

Below are some photos that show the progress of the sculpture. Putting the main underlying structures in place at the beginning makes accurate progress easier. I am using a very hard clay (Chavant NSP Hard Brown), which must be warmed to soften before applying, but what I put in place isn't easily ruined while working on nearby areas (something I do all too often with soft clay). The armature is based on small (1/4 inch?) plumbing pipe and artists' armature wire.
