Jennifer Kistler Studios: about the artist

About the Artist

My passion for horses, for art, and for creating things by hand has been lifelong. It started with drawing horses and trying many crafts as a child. I have been involved in the model horse hobby since 1984. When I learned that people made their own scale miniature saddles and altered the mass-produced plastic horses with new paintjobs, I had to try it! My parents made sure I had supplies, took me to many model horse shows, and gave me lots of encouragement. I have worked on improving my saddles and tack for many years since. And customizing plastic model horses eventually lead me to do my own sculptures from scratch, which I really enjoy, along with painting them.

I have a Bachelor degree in Economics (with a minor in art). I have been married to Craig since 1993, and we have two boys. Other activities I enjoy include digital scrapbooking (and sometimes paper scrapping and rubber stamping), playing piano, and working in our yard. Spring 2008 we started learning Taekwondo as a family, and I am really enjoying it.

As an adult I began to realize my life-long dream to ride. I am fascinated by the elegant art in motion that is achieved with good dressage training. I admire the beauty and strength of the horse above all other God's creatures. I especially appreciate the relationship between humans and horses, which often influences my choices in creating equine art.

I also make beaded jewelry. I love taking beautiful natural stone beads and turning them into something that can be worn. I have decided to focus mainly on horse-theme jewelry, and I have started making some exclusive designs in fine silver as pendants and accents. Combining natural stone beads with the silver horse pieces seems perfect to me.

As an artist, my goal is to do my current best with every piece, and always be improving. I learn something new while working on every piece. I want to capture the profound beauty of the horse (or whatever subject) for others to enjoy and appreciate nature, which is the art of God!
